Outstanding Young Alumni Award
Bryan J. Katz, Ph.D., P.E., PTOE,
2000 B.S. Civil Engineering; 2001 M.S. Civil Engineering; 2007 Ph.D. Civil Engineering

Bryan Katz received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Via Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) and has made significant contributions to the department and to the profession in general. Dr. Katz’s contributions to the department include teaching, undergraduate research, and corporate support. He is currently an adjunct faculty member in the CEE department.



Since summer 2007, Dr. Katz has taught four sections of the Introduction to Transportation Engineering course and one small group section of Introduction to Civil Engineering. He also volunteers his time to the department by advising undergraduate students on research projects. To date, Dr. Katz has worked with seven students on projects and has worked with some of them to present their research to technical audiences as well as publish findings in technical journals.



Since 2002, he has worked as a transportation engineer with Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) to design, conduct, analyze, report, and manage transportation research as a principal investigator on a human factors contract for the Federal Highway Administration, as well as on contracts for its Office of Safety and Office of Operations.



Dr. Katz is a member of SAIC’s corporate Virginia Tech University Relations Council and this year, he led the initiative of a new $50,000/year program to sponsor two individuals as SAIC Transportation Research Fellows.



In the transportation field, Dr. Katz has provided extraordinary service to the transportation profession. Specifically, he is the safety committee chairman in the Virginia section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers, the Secretary of the Research Committee for the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and he is active on several other research and standards committees. In addition, he has presented at many technical conferences and has several publications including refereed journal publications as well as refereed conference proceedings.



His awards and honors include: Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities (1999); CEE Alumni Board Scholarship Recipient, Via Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech (2000); Mid-Atlantic Universities Transportation Center Student of the Year, U.S. Department of Transportation (2001); and Certificate of Commendation, Traffic Safety Division, Fairfax County Police Department (2007).



His is a member of the Transportation Research Board, Institute of Transportation Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, American Society of Engineering Education, and Chi Epsilon.
