William F. Brittle, Jr., P.E.,
1969 B.S. Civil Engineering

Bill Brittle is originally from Fauquier County, Warrenton, Va. He graduated from Virginia Tech’s Via Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science degree and earned his Master’s degree in Engineering Administration from George Washington University in 1975.



In 1969, he married a classmate, Emily Warren Button, who earned a math degree from Virginia Tech. They moved to Maryland where Mr. Brittle started his nearly 40-year career with Bechtel Corporation.



During that time he was involved in engineering, planning, administrative and managerial aspects on various projects throughout North America as well as internationally. He held positions as chief civil, structural, and architectural engineer of a department of over 180 engineers and designers.



Mr. Brittle is currently the engineering manager responsible for Bechtel’s corporate global learning and development for over 6,000 engineers. Previously, he was the project engineer responsible for the structural design of the train stations for the extension of the Washington, D.C. Metrorail system to Dulles Airport.



Mr. Brittle is an active member of the Maryland American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). He is currently in the process of establishing a Western Maryland branch of the ASCE Maryland Section. He serves on the board of directors for the newly formed Structural Engineering Institution (SEI) chapter, in addition to having served as treasurer and president. Other affiliations include: American Concrete Institute, American Institute of Steel Construction, American Society of Engineering Educators, and National Society of Professional Engineers.



An avid supporter of Virginia Tech, Mr. Brittle served as a recruiter for Bechtel and as the company’s management representative for many years. He has guest lectured in Blacksburg as well as the Northern Virginia campus on topics related to civil engineering. He and his wife Emily are members of the Legacy Society and are regular contributors to the CEE and math departments. He served a six-year term on the Alumni Board and continues to attend meetings when he can.



Other community service activities include coaching soccer and softball, judging science fairs, and serving as a volunteer for Engineers’ Week, Special Olympics, and Habitat for Humanity, among others. Mr. Brittle served in the Episcopalian Church as a vestry person, junior warden, accountant and lay reader. Presently he is a volunteer mentor in the architecture, construction, and engineering program for high school students.



Bill and Emily have a daughter, Elizabeth, who is married with two children and earned her degree in biology and biochemistry from Virginia Tech.
