Outstanding Young Alumni Award
F. Cameron Palmore,
1995 B.S. Civil Engineering
Vice President, Balzer and Associates, Inc.

Mr. Palmore received his B.S. in civil engineering from Virginia Tech in 1995 and began working for Balzer and Associates, Inc., a firm where he had worked several summers during his undergraduate career. In 1998, he left Balzer to join URS Greiner before returning to Balzer in 2000, and receiving his P.E. license in 2001. Since then, he has risen from engineering project manager to department head and was appointed to vice president of the company in 2007.

Mr. Palmore’s primary focus at Balzer has been in land development services. His major emphasis is on road, drainage, and utility design, specializing in drainage, large road projects, sanitary sewer pump stations, planning, and representing clients in zoning cases. He also developed a summer internship program at the firm.

He has been involved in Virginia Tech’s Land Development Design Initiative (LDDI) nearly since its inception in 2006, giving freely of his time and energy. Mr. Palmore has chaired the LDDI committee on curriculum and course enhancement for three years, coordinating the group’s progress in adding courses from one senior elective taught once a year to what is now a total of five different courses. He has served multiple times as a mentor for design teams and has helped coordinate and teach one-third of the advanced land development design course each of the three times it has been offered. Commuting to Blacksburg from Richmond and teaching this course on the weekend shows dedication above and beyond the norm.

This personality trait is evident in his community service efforts as well. A strong family man with three young sons, Mr. Palmore is a member of The Rotary Club of Powhatan and chairs the Community Service Committee. He also coaches several local soccer teams and is involved in school programs when he’s not otherwise engaged at home, work, or with VT’s LDDI program. According to Tommy Balzer, "Cameron is exactly the kind of employee that an employer hopes to have; he’s conscientious, he does what he says he is going to do, demonstrates leadership, has a terrific attitude, and he continues to develop his professional skills."
