Melinda Peters, P.E.,

Ms. Melinda B. Peters graduated from Virginia Tech in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, and in 1999, she obtained a Masters of Business Administration from Mount Saint Mary’s College. Upon completion of her undergraduate degree, she began working for the Maryland State Highway Administration, Office of Highway Development. Her professional responsibilities included numerous positions and titles such as project designer and program manager.



She is a licensed registered Professional Engineer in the State of Maryland.



In 2006, Ms. Peters was promoted to director for the Intercounty Connector Project, a position she currently holds. As director, she leads a multi-discipline group consisting of federal, state, and local agencies as well as consultants, contractors, environmental agencies, community residents, and her 25-person management team that are responsible for the $2.5 billion project. This massive project includes design and construction of 18.8 miles of six lane highway surrounding Washington D.C. and approximately $100 million in stewardship projects and environmental mitigation projects. The ICC is the largest highway project in the Washington D.C. area since Interstate 66 and one of the most significant.



In addition, Ms. Peters has been recognized by her peers with several professional awards for her outstanding service: 2003 Manager of the Year from the Maryland State Highway Administration, 2009 Partner in Quality Award from the Federal Highway Administration, 2009 Civil Engineer of the Year from the American Society of Civil Engineers Baltimore Chapter, and the 2009 Woman of the Year from the Women in Transportation Society. In addition, Ms. Peters was recognized by the Professional Women in Construction – Washington, D.C. Chapter as the Woman of the Year for 2010. A very flattering article published in the July 18, 2010 issue of The Washington Post Magazine featured Ms. Peters and her professional accomplishments. Beverly K. Swaim-Staley, Maryland’s transportation secretary, told The Washington Post Magazine, "I don’t think you can underestimate the importance of having a female engineer overseeing one of the most significant projects we’ve done in the state of Maryland."



She is a member of American Society of Civil Engineers and Women in Transportation Society. Ms. Peters has been married to her husband, Phil for 15 years and they have two children: PJ and Jake. In addition, she is a triathlete and completed her first Ironman race in 2010.
