Douglas W. Burks,
1979 B.S. Civil Engineering

Mr. Douglas W. Burks graduated from Virginia Tech in 1979 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering and began working full-time for Hankins and Anderson, Inc. (H & A, Inc.), a multi-discipline engineering and architectural consulting firm located in Richmond, Va. Mr. Burks spent his entire professional career with H & A, Inc., starting as a summer intern and advancing through the ranks to his final positions as Chairman of

the Board and Chief Structural Engineer before retiring in 2008. Over the last ten years of his career, he helped guide H & A, Inc. through

a four-fold growth in personnel and an eight-fold growth in revenue, repositioning what was a regional firm to one with national and international exposure.



Mr. Burks has extensive experience in structural engineering providing services to architects, governmental agencies, public and private institutions, construction and development management groups, and the general public. Throughout his career, Mr. Burks was involved in a broad range of projects both domestically and abroad; his work has led him to visit over forty-five countries on six continents. He is a  licensed professional engineer in five states.



Much of Mr. Burks's career has been focused on serving federal government clients including the Department of Defense, General Services Administration, Department of State, and various components of the intelligence community. A sample of his projects include: Mount Weather Emergency Operations Center, Alert and Readiness Cell, Mount Weather, Va.; U.S. Embassy Compound, Baghdad, Iraq; U.S. Embassy Compound, Kabul, Afghanistan; various renovations, George Bush Center for Intelligence, Langley, Va.; and the Albert Bryan Federal Courthouse, Alexandria, Va. In addition to federal projects, his private sector work has included projects varying from the Rappahannock Regional Jail Expansion, Stafford County, Va.; to the Greenbrier Hotel, White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., to the most recent expansion and renovation of the Virginia Museum of Fine Art, Richmond, Va.



Throughout his career Mr. Burks has held memberships or affiliations with American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC); American  Concrete Institute (ACI); American Consulting Engineering Council (ACEC); American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE); Design/Build Institute of America (DBIA); and Virginia Structural Engineers Council (VSEC). He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Delta Airport Consultants, Inc., headquartered in Richmond, Va., as well as the Finance Committee and Board of Directors of Richmond Country

Club.



Mr. Burks is a member of both the CEE Alumni Board and the Committee of 100 at Virginia Tech, and works with University Honors, serving as a juror for the Sophomore Scholarship Program. He is a member of Ut Prosim and the Legacy Society.



Mr. Burks and his wife, June, have two sons, Christopher and Andrew, and his other interests include golf, basketball, reading, and travel.
