During his time at West Point, he volunteered to deploy to Afghanistan to bring civil engineering courses and hire faculty for the new National Military Academy of Afghanistan. His commitment to educating, inspiring, and mentoring his students and selfless service outside the classroom led to his selection as the ASCE Excellence in Civil Engineering Education (ExCEEd), and New Faculty Excellence in Teaching Awards in 2009.

From 2009 – 2010, Hill was assigned to the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt, where he served as an Operations Officer for the 12 nation Multinational Forces and Observers responsible for monitoring the Treaty of Peace between Egypt and Israel.
