Outstanding Young Alumni Award
Dr. Justin D. Marshall,
2008 Ph.D. Civil Engineering
Auburn University

Dr. Justin D. Marshall, Ph.D., P.E., is an Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering with an emphasis in structural engineering at Auburn University in Alabama. He started at Auburn in January of 2009 after receiving his doctorate from the Via Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Virginia Tech in December of 2008. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from Brigham Young University in 2000. Prior to seeking his Ph.D., Dr. Marshall was employed as a Consulting Structural Engineer with Delta Engineers, PC in Binghamton, New York. He worked there for 4 ½ years on a wide variety of structural projects.

As an Assistant Professor at Auburn University Dr. Marshall has already published ten peer-reviewed journal articles, numerous conference papers, and several technical reports. He has developed a strong research program, with a number of impressive grants from the Alabama Department of Transportation, the National Science Foundation, and others. He is also participating in a variety of technical society activities with American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the U.S. Geological Survey, and the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute. Marshall has recently joined the ASCE 7 Seismic Subcommittee as an associate member. Four of his research assistants have completed master’s degrees (with thesis), and he has several M.S. and Ph.D. students currently seeking degrees.

Most notably, Dr. Marshall’s interest and participation in the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute has led him to serve on a number of post-earthquake reconnaissance teams organized by the institute in partnership with the National Science Foundation. He has already been deployed to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Christchurch, New Zealand. He also helped gather information after the earthquake in Virginia. These teams are carefully selected, and it is a great honor for a young professor like Dr. Marshall to be invited (and re-invited) to participate on these important efforts.

Dr. Marshall’s mentor from Virginia Tech, Dr. Finley A. Charney, professor of civil and environmental engineering, stated in his nomination, “Justin is an outstanding teacher.” Dr. Finley also praised Dr. Marshall for his “teaching style and his ability to engage the students in class.” He ended his glowing review with a note about the talents that Auburn has gained from this Virginia Tech alumnus.

Dr. Marshall and his wife, Ginger, have four children, Andrew, Hawley, Audrey and Holden.
