Stanley Cohen graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth, Virginia, in June 1945 and joined the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets that same month. Working during the summers as a life guard at Virginia Beach, Stanley received his B.S. in Architectural Engineering in 1949 and enrolled immediately in Civil Engineering graduate courses, serving as a teaching assistant for Col. Begg, then head of the department. While at Virginia Tech, Mr. Cohen was inducted into two honor societies, Architectural Engineering's Phi Kappa Phi and Civil Engineering's Tau Beta Pi.

While also working as a line and grade engineer for the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission from 1950 to 1951, Mr. Cohen completed his M.S. at Virginia Tech. He then moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, to begin a 27-year career as Chief Engineer and Field Manager with a major construction firm, and during that time he became a Registered P.E. in Virginia and eight other states.

Mr. Cohen founded Stanley Enterprises, Inc., in 1978. Before his retirement from the construction industry in 1993, the firm designed and constructed buildings in 15 states for large national accounts. Mr. Cohen continues to act as an engineering consultant to former clients.

His wife, Frances, is active in supporting the University of Cincinnati, where the couple established the Frances and Stanley Cohen Scholarship in Design and Graphics. They also endowed the Stanley and Frances Cohen Lecture Series at the Taft Museum in Cincinnati, and support the city's Symphony Association, Art Museum, and several other cultural and charitable organizations.

An active and generous Virginia Tech alumnus, he originally endowed the Stanley and Frances Cohen Scholarship in CEE in 1984, and continues to supplement the funding to provide at least four scholarships annually. The Stanley Cohen Corps of Cadets Scholarship was established in 1993, and will be fully endowed with a testamentary gift. He is a charter member of the Virginia Tech Ut Prosim Society, College of Engineering Committee of 100, and CEE Alumni Advisory Board. In addition, Mr. Cohen is a member of the university's Legacy Society and is a Silver Hokie.

Stanley is a FCC licensed amateur radio operator. As a former net controller of the International Maritime Mobile Service Net and the Seafarer's Net, he has assisted in several medical and life-saving operations. He also served as Emergency Coordinator for the Hamilton (Ohio) County Amateur Radio Public Service Corps. Mr. Cohen rides his Appaloosa gelding, "Sundance," frequently, and also cleans the barn and hauls the hay. He is an avid student of the American Civil War and World War II. "Friends are invited to come and enjoy the magnificent cultural, world-class assets available in Cincinnati," he says, "and be our guest at Reds baseball games, the Grand Prix Jumping Classic in July, or the ATP Tennis Tournament in August each year."
