Academy of Distinguished Alumni
Timrod A. Groover,
1979 B.S. Civil Engineering; 1980 M.S. Civil Engineering
Wiley|Wilson

Upon graduation with a master’s degree in civil engineering in 1980, Tim Groover and his wife Beth moved to Chicago where he began working for Chicago Bridge & Iron Company as a structural and foundations engineer. After four years with CBI, including some on-site field work in the United Arab Emirates, the couple returned to Virginia where he began working for Wiley|Wilson in Lynchburg as a Structural Engineer.

Within a few years, Groover had advanced to the position of Structural Department Manager, soon followed by Project Manager, and Vice President in charge of Wiley|Wilson’s building design work. In 1991, he accepted a position at AREVA in their outage services division where he held the positions of Contract Manager, Field Services Manager and Industrial Services Manager. In 1997, Groover began working with The Haskell Company Frazier Division where he served as Vice President of Design. In 2000, Groover returned to Wiley|Wilson to assist in leading an ownership transition that resulted in Wiley|Wilson becoming a 100 percent Employee-Owned (ESOP) Company. Groover has served as President and COO of Wiley|Wilson since 2005.

The highlight so far of Groover’s career was his role in transforming Wiley|Wilson from a privately held firm to a 100 percent employee sock ownership plan. Along the way, he has developed a collaborative mindset towards business and leadership that he openly shares with audiences ranging from Virginia Tech Civil and Environmental Engineering students to business groups throughout the region. For the past four years, Groover has received Speaker of the Year honors through the Lynchburg Regional Chamber of Commerce’s award winning Leadership Lynchburg program where he shares the importance of life altering moments on the development of one’s leadership style.

Groover joined the Civil and Environmental Engineering alumni board in 2006 welcoming the chance to reconnect with his alma mater in a “hands on” way. He served as alumni board chair in 2008 and 2009. In this position, he represented the alumni board in both the celebratory recognition of the completion of Bill Knocke’s tenure as Department Head and the search and eventual installation of Sam Easterling as Department Head. Serving on the board in the years during and after the April 16, 2007 tragedy was an honor for Tim as he was able to witness firsthand the strength and healing that the Hokie family showed in the most difficult times. Groover is also a member of the College of Engineering Committee of 100 at Virginia Tech.

Groover has been an officer in Virginia Society of Professional Engineers (VSPE) and ASCE and is currently the President Elect of the American Council of Engineering Companies of Virginia. His community service also includes co-founder and board member of The Angels Foundation and the Angels Race Triathlon, Chairman of BEDCO CARES, a community based coalition in Bedford County established to address the dangers of teen driving, Vice Chair of All Points Employee Assistance Program, and member of the Board of Directors for the Central Virginia YMCA, and the Amazement Square Children’s Museum. In his free time he enjoys kayaking, biking, running, golf, photography, and music.

The Groovers have two daughters, Linde and Carly.
