Robert F. Jansen,
B.S. 1980
Jansen Land Consulting

Mr. Robert F. Jansen, P.E. earned his bachelors degree in Civil Engineering from the Via Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in 1980. Upon graduation he joined Dewberry, Nealon & Davis (now Dewberry) working in the field of land development through surveying and commercial/residential site plan design. He led Dewberry’s efforts in the mid-1980s employing the new technology of that time Computer Aided Design (CAD) into site plan design and drafting.
In 1996, Jansen joined Pulte Homes as Director of Land Development and then in 2005 he was named Vice President of Land Development at KB Home. During this time, Jansen oversaw all development operations from entitlement to project close out for over 2,600 residential lots in excess of $350 million in land development infrastructure. In fact, Jansen played a major role in developing some of the largest Planned Urban Developments (PUDs) in the Washington Metropolitan area including Laurel Hill and Faircrest in Northern Virginia, and Fallsgrove and the Crown Farm in Montgomery County, Maryland. He was one of the first homebuilders to establish collaboration between multiple consulting and general contracting firms to expedite successful project entitlement and development.
In 2008, Jansen founded Jansen Land Consulting, a small firm focused on project management for residential, commercial and municipal land development infrastructure projects. Over the past 6 years the firm has grown steadily serving its clients in almost every jurisdiction in the Washington Metropolitan area. Recently the firm was awarded management of all land development infrastructure work relocating two of Montgomery County Maryland’s major facilities at the Shady Grove Metro Station and transforming that area to residential, commercial and retail uses for the Washington DC Builder EYA.
Jansen served on the Via Department Alumni Board from 2005 through 2013, serving as Chair in 2010-2011. He has been involved with the Department’s Land Development Design Initiative (LDDI) since its inception in 2006, serving on its Advisory Board and recently being named a Life Member of the Advisory Board. He is committed and continues to work toward that program’s goal of endowment. Jansen considers his time with the Department as one of the greatest honors and joys of his professional career.
Jansen’s company has enabled him to fulfill some philanthropic goals. Since 2008 he has been a mentor, giving both time and financial support, to the Virginia Tech Chapter of Engineers without Borders. His firm supports both St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and the Epilepsy Foundation with his company participating in the National Walk for Epilepsy each spring in our Nation’s Capital. He is an active member of Rotary International and has been working for the last several years on bringing clean water and sanitation to rural schools in Zambia, Africa.
Jansen resides in Fairfax County and has been married to his wife Anne, also a Hokie, for the past 32 years. Their son Michael also graduated from Virginia Tech in 2009 with a degree in Environmental Science.
