George T. Paris,
B.S. 1975, M.S. 1977
Campbell & Paris Engineers

George T. Paris received both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the Via Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. It was during those years that he was first exposed to large scale engineering and transportation while he worked at the Newport News Shipyard during his college summer breaks. That experience was instrumental in setting him on his career path.
After graduating from Virginia Tech, Mr. Paris took a job with the Virginia Department of Transportation in the state's pavement design office in Richmond. He provided engineering support for pavement designs throughout the state highway system, as well as managing the relatively new statewide skid inventory/pavement friction testing program. Following that job, with the assistance of the CEE department, he received a NASA GRA grant that allowed him to return to Virginia Tech to obtain an MSCE.

In 1982, at just 29 years of age, Mr. Paris, along with H.D. Campbell, Jr. and Roy D. McQueen, formed Campbell, McQueen and Paris Engineers. The firm (name later changed to Campbell & Paris Engineers) specialized in airport planning, design and construction management working on private, general aviation, commercial and military airport projects throughout the United States, Caribbean and South America. His primary roles were transportation planning and design support. The firm has continually been described as a superb leader from others in the airport design and planning industry. In 2010, he retired from the firm as President.

Notable accomplishments include Mr. Paris serving as the Project Manager or Principal-in-Charge for a variety of projects. He helped transform the Stafford Regional Airport from a 500-acre "greenfield" site into a new $35 million business class reliever airport on the I-95 corridor in Stafford County Virginia. He also led the planning, environmental permitting, design and construction management of numerous projects at the Burlington International Airport in Vermont, which required one of the largest wetland disturbance permits ever granted by COE/ANR. Internationally, he was the project manager for airport facilities development in Puerto Rico and Argentina. Mr. Paris led the preparation of the Master Plan, Environmental Assessment and design studies for facility improvements for more than 15 years at the Virginia Tech Airport in Blacksburg. Construction of the main runway improvements is scheduled to begin this spring.

He has served as the civil engineering panel expert on more than a dozen Value Engineering team reviews for NAVFAC and other military projects worldwide. He has also been an expert witness for aviation accidents and for condemnation/acquisition of property/easements for airport development. He was also a registered professional engineering in five states.

Mr. Paris has supported the CEE department on numerous occasions, including career day presentations to the ASCE Young Professionals Group. Campbell & Paris Engineers has provided significant financial support to the Department. Mr. Paris volunteered many years providing leadership and organization for the Alumni Golf Outing, the longest running and most successful alumni event. He significantly increased the number of company sponsors and worked hard to recruit players over the 15 years he served in this role.

He is a proud Hokie, serving for many years as President of his local Hokie Club and Alumni Association in Prince William County. He is an award winning designated "Hokie Representative" actively engaged in Hokie events throughout his community. Mr. Paris and his wife, Mary, have been married for 33 years and have twins, Eric and Amanda. All three family members are also Virginia Tech alumni.
