Vice President, Appalachian Power Company

Daniel Carson, Jr., is vice president for Appalachian Power Company, a regional subsidiary of American Electric Power Company (AEP) serving portions of Virginia, West Virginia and Tennessee. He is responsible for Appalachian’s community and governmental affairs, economic development, customer services and marketing functions.



Mr. Carson joined Appalachian Power in 1970 after graduating from Virginia Tech with a degree in civil engineering. He became assistant manager of the Roanoke Division in 1982, was named Abingdon division manager in 1983, and returned to Roanoke in 1986 as executive assistant to the president. He was appointed vice president in 1992, having responsibility for the company’s rates and contracts, accounting, and governmental affairs functions. Mr. Carson was Virginia and Tennessee state president for AEP from 1996 until 2004, when a regional operating company struc-

ture was re-instituted by the company.



Mr. Carson also earned a master of business administration degree in 1977 from Lynchburg College and was awarded a master of science degree in management from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1982, following a year of study on an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship. He is a registered

professional engineer.



Mr. Carson is a past chairman of the board of directors of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce, past chairman of the board of directors and director emeritus of the Western Virginia Foundation for the Arts and Sciences, and formerly served as board chair for the Roanoke Valley Business Council, the Washington County Chamber of Commerce, and Roanoke Country Club.



Currently, he is director, secretary-treasurer, and member of the executive committee of the Virginia Manufacturers Association as well as chairman of its Energy Resources Committee. He is a member of the boards of directors of the Virginia College Fund, the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges (for which he chairs the board’s Career and Workforce Development Committee), the Virginia Business Higher Education Council, the Virginia Foundation for Research and Economic Education (Virginia FREE), the Virginia Economic Bridge Initiative, The United Way of Roanoke Valley, the Salvation Army, and the Shenandoah Club. He has also returned as a board member for the Virginia Chamber of Commerce and serves as a member of the advisory board for the Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority.



Mr. Carson is a member of the downtown Roanoke Rotary Club and of the Virginia Tech College of Engineering’s Committee of 100, which he serves as an advisory board member. He and his wife, Sandy, are members of Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, Roanoke.
