Patrick N. Shaffner,
B.S.1961

Mr. Shaffner retired in 1998 from his position as chairman and CEO of SFCS, Inc, formerly Sherertz Franklin Crawford Shaffner, Inc., a medium-sized architectural/engineering/planning firm with its main office in Roanoke, Va. He served as president of the firm from 1988 to 1995 and was the managing partner from 1972 to 1987. Also from 1972 to 1998, he served as principal-in-charge on numerous major design projects and from 1972 to 1980 he supervised civil and structural design. In 1968, he joined Sherertz and Franklin as a senior structural engineer. Prior to that Mr. Shaffner worked for Hayes, Seay, Mattern and Mattern for five years as a structural engineer, where he planned and designed structural systems for this architectural/engineering firm. He served as a company commander in the U.S. Army, Corps of Engineers from 1961 to 1963, where he planned and directed various construction projects.



Mr. Shafter was honored by the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce in 1991 as Small Business Person of the Year. He also appears in Who’s Who in America.



Mr. Shaffner has been very active in the community, serving on numerous boards including the American Heart Association, Downtown Roanoke Inc., Mill Mountain Theatre, Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce, Virginia Western Community College, Catholic Charities of Southwest Virginia, and United Way of Roanoke Valley (vice president). He was the chairman of the board of the American Red Cross, Roanoke Valley Chapter; an associate member of the American Institute of Architects; a

fellow and president (Roanoke Chapter) of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and president of the Virginia Foundation for Architecture.



He currently serves on the board of directors of Delta Dental Plan of Virginia; is vice president of Roanoke Foundation of Downtown Inc.; is honorary member, Paul Harris Fellow and past president of Roanoke Rotary Club. He is a member of Virginia Tech’s College of Engineering Committee of 100 Advisory Board; and is active in the Virginia Tech Student Aid Association, Bacchus of Roanoke, The Benedicts, Roanoke Country Club, The Piedmont Club, Virginia Baptist Childrens’ Home & Family Services (treasurer, board of trustees) and is chairman of the board of trustees of Virginia Baptist Childrens’ Home Foundation.



Born in Burlington, N.C., Mr. Shaffner now lives in Salem, Va. with his wife, Patricia Anne Anders Shaffner. They have three children: Scott, who graduated from Radford University in 1988; Kimberly, who earned a B.S. degree in 1986 from Virginia Tech; and Melissa, a 1988 graduate of University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
