Arthur W. McKinney, P.E., S.E., FACEC,
1966 (Class of ’65) B.S. Civil Engineering (Architectural Engineering)

Art McKinney graduated from Virginia Tech in 1966 with a bachelor’s degree in architectural engineering. In 1979, he founded McKinney & Company, a professional services company providing planning, architecture, engineering, construction management and quality assurance. The firm currently employs 100 people and has offices in Ashland and Williamsburg, Va.



In early 2000, Mr. McKinney incorporated McKinney International and opened a permanent office in the Republic of Panama. McKinney & Company’s market includes logistics, high technology, manufacturing, laboratory, chemical and biologic process, and commercial facility planning, design and construction throughout the United States and abroad. In response to client demand, the firm has developed an experienced staff of urban and land plan-ners, landscape architects, architects, geotechnical, civil, structural, mechanical, process and electrical engineers, and project and construction managers.



Significant current or recent projects include: Commonwealth of Virginia, Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services, 2003; Screwworm Sterile Fly Production Facility, Panama, 2006; Universal Leaf, Tobacco Processing Facility, 2003; Northrop Grumman, Enterprise Solution Centers (VITA), 2007; Division of Forensic Science, Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, NOVA, 2008.



Other current or recent clients include Hewlett Packard, Lowe’s, Walmart, Capital One, Ace Hardware, Liberty Property Trust, Virginia Biotechnology Research Park, VCU, Virginia Tech, William & Mary, Colonial Williamsburg, and AmeriGroup.



McKinney & Company has been recognized as both a “Rising 25” and “Fantastic 50” firm, ranking in both the top 25 fastest growing firms in the Richmond area from 1999 through 2002) and in the top 50 in Virginia (1999 through 2002) based on revenue growth over the preceding five years. Mr. McKinney participated in the 2003-2004 class of the Virginia Leaders in Export Trade (VALET) Program. He currently serves as Chair of the Emerging Markets Task Force of the Virginia International Trade Alliance (VITAL).



Mr. McKinney is recognized for his technical work in the design and construction of industrial floor slabs and the use of building systems in industrial applications. He is a member and immediate past chairman of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) Committee 360, Design of Slabs on Grade, a member of Committee 302, Concrete Floor and Slab Construction, and Committee 117, Tolerances.



Prior to the establishment of McKinney & Company in 1979, Mr. McKinney had 11 years experience with a multi-discipline architectural and engineering firm and designed significant projects throughout the United States as well as work in Latin America and Africa, and a further two years experience with a structural engineering firm.



He is a licensed Professional Engineer in Virginia, Florida, Indiana, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana and Texas. He is licensed as a Structural Engineer in Illinois and as a Professional Engineer, Certified for Structural in Utah. He has also been certified for practice in Structural Engineering by the Structural Engineering Certification Board.



Mr. McKinney has held numerous positions in several professional organizations, including leadership roles at the national, state, and local level. Examples include: American Council of Engineering Companies, elected fellow in 1999, past national director, and past president of the Virginia chapter, current chair of Fellows Committee; American Concrete Institute, voting member of three technical committees and coordinator/instructor for national seminars on design of slabs on ground; National Society of Professional Engineers, Virginia Society of Professional Engineers, member and past president, Richmond Chapter. He is a member of the American Institute of Steel Construction; International Code Council (ICC); Construction Specifications Institute; Virginia Structural Engineers Council; and Council of American Structural Engineers, past chairman, Virginia.



Mr. McKinney served as technical advisor to the Virginia Shell Building Initiative and has instructed numerous seminars on Marketable Sites and Buildings. Art was recognized as a Distinguished Faculty Member of the Virginia Institute of Economic Development in 2000, 2001 and 2002.



Mr. McKinney currently serves on the Committee of 100 of the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech and chairs the Advisory Board to the College of Engineering. He is also a member of the Ut Prosim Society and further served on the Task Force for the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science (ICTAS) and as a member of the Alumni Board of the Via Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.



In his local community, Mr. McKinney is a past president of Ashland Kiwanis and has been recognized with the Kiwanis Legion of Honor. Art and his wife, Jerry, currently co-chair the capital campaign for the Patrick Henry YMCA. He has previously served as chair of the Ashland Industrial Development Authority and served on the Ashland Historic Zoning Commit-tee, the Ashland Economic Development Committee, and has provided significant support to other local initiatives. In 2004, the Rotary Club of Innsbrook selected Art for their Business Leadership Award.



The McKinneys live in Beaverdam, Va.
