Additional Comments :
based in Norfolk, VA Professor Dan Pletta was my engineer mentor from sophomore year at Tech for forty years until he died. My career was enhanced by getting to know other engineers at work and learning from them. Beyond those colleagues, my networking grew through the Virginia Society of Professional Engineers (VSPE) and American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and gradually into civic affairs at all levels. We owe [former Department Head] Wayne Clough (who now runs the Smithsonian) for his courage and genius in creating our CEE Alumni Board as our feedback loop. Networking enabled me to work on engineering issues at the state and national levels. These activities broadened my knowledge and skills, advancing my career. Engineering ethics and professionalism are essential building blocks and demand lifelong study. Mentoring younger engineers to "pay it forward" has been a joy for me.
