CEE 4284 : ADVANCED LAND DEVELOPMENT DESIGN
Course Description :

This advanced course will be totally taught by three teams of land development professionals with organizational help from the CEE department.

The meeting times will be different from most courses at Virginia Tech to accommodate the hours of the professionals. Most contact hours will be longer sessions either in the evenings or weekends. Meeting locations will be predominantly at Virginia Tech, but the class will also travel to job sites.

CEE 4284 reviews the basics of CEE 4274 - Land Development Design, but then uses case studies that are familiar to the 3 teams of practitioners to highlight specific types of developments and issues.

Each team of professionals will be responsible for a 5 week period (15 contact hours) with the goal of presenting a project constraints, issues, and applicable codes, and then giving the student groups a chance to come up with a design that works. Each team will focus on a particular segment of a project, such as stormwater management or erosion and sediment control.

Specific Course Objectives :
  • Recognize and describe the due diligence issues involved in a land development project.
  • Develop grading and parking solutions for a development site.
  • Create a stormwater management plan for a site based on hydrologic and hydraulic calculations.
  • Describe the applications of popular Best Management Practices in contemporary land development design.
  • Identify the pertinent project delivery methods used in practice.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the major issues involved in redevelopment and infill projects.
Course Prerequisite :
Pre-requisite: CEE 3274 (C- or better). Co-requisite: CEE 4274. Students must have either taken or be taking CEE 4274.

This course is offered every other year in the Spring semester. Senior or Graduate Standing Required. This course will count as an Advanced Course in the Land Development Specialty Area.
