CEE 4384 : INTRODUCTION TO COASTAL ENGINEERING
Course Description :

This course will provide an introduction to physical processes impacting the coast, quantification of design conditions, and functional design of coastal structures. Specific topics covered in this course include linear wave theory, littoral processes, tides, coastal storms, beach nourishment, and functional design of coastal structures. This course includes a mandatory two-day field trip to the Virginia/North Carolina coast.

Specific Course Objectives :
  • Apply fundamentals of wave mechanics to coastal engineering problems.
  • Explain basic sediment transport concepts as they relate to coastal processes.
  • Describe the fundamentals of long waves: astronomical tides, storm surge, and tsunamis.
  • Evaluate beach changes using littoral processes methods.
  • Apply coastal processes principles to design functional shore protection.
