CEE 5504 : RISK ANALYSIS IN GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING
Course Description :

Methods for risk analysis of complex systems. Basic concepts of probability and reliability applied to geotechnical engineering problems. Geostatistics concepts. Probabilistic seismic hazard analysis and performance based design. Computational tools and simulation methods.

Specific Course Objectives :
  • Define and explain basic concepts in probability theory applied to geotechnical systems.
  • Use geostatistical methods to compute parameters for spatial variability models for geotechnical properties.
  • Compute probability of failure for simple geotechnical designs.
  • Build 'fault trees' and 'event trees' for failure analysis of geotechnical systems.
  • Perform Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis for simplified fault geometries.
  • Design a project demonstrating the implementation of 'uniform-risk' concepts in current seismic building codes.
  • Analyze key components of performance-based design.
