CEE 5984 : (SPRING 2021) BLAST RESISTANT DESIGN OF STRUCTURES
Course Description :

Analysis and design of structural and non-structural systems subjected to blast loads.
Explosives and blast phenomenology. Material behavior at high strain rates. Structural
dynamics of blast loaded structures. General considerations for blast resistant design.
Design and detailing of blast-resistant concrete, structural steel and masonry structures.
Retrofitting and hardening of existing structures. Physical security, and blast risk and
threat assessment. Software tools for blast pressure calculation (semi-empirical
OverPressure, CFD), and dynamic analysis (SDOF RCBlast, FEA) will be utilized throughout.

Specific Course Objectives :
  • Identify protective design objectives for various types of civil infrastructure;
  • Select response parameters used to quantify component damage levels
  • Identify different explosion sources and characterize their influence on blast parameters
  • Incorporate the effect of high strain rates on material properties into the design process
  • Use dynamic analysis tools to establish the response of structures subject to blast loads
  • Design blast resistant structural concrete and steel components, as well as door and
    windows
  • Design blast retrofit techniques for existing facilities
